I spent weeks in Bangkok, as it seems to be a place everyone passes through. First with my sister, then with Christine, who had a conference there, and finally with Roger, who was still criss-crossing Asia and whom I would bump into once more in Hanoi, just in time to plan the China leg of my trip. From Bangkok I followed the traditional backpackers’ route from Thailand into Laos, through Cambodia and up to Vietnam. Everywhere you go you can get banana pancakes, as that is what backpackers seem to eat in Southeast Asia.
